Press Release: Nashville Zoo Bay Giraffe on Exhibit tomorrow.

Baby Giraffe Goes on Exhibit

Nashville Zoo’s three-week old Masai giraffe will be making her public debut this Saturday, June 23. Guests can see the young calf, named Camilla, on exhibit from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the African Savannah with the Zoo’s other female giraffes, Margarita and Layla.
“Camilla made a brief appearance on exhibit this morning so we could get her acclimated to the habitat,” said Kate Cortelyou, lead giraffe keeper. “Everything went very well, so we are excited for guests to officially meet her on Saturday.”
The Zoo’s 7-year old Masai giraffe Margarita gave birth to the female calf on Sunday, June 10. Now three weeks old, Camilla weighs 185 lbs. and stands 6 feet, 2 inches tall. The Zoo plans to alternate the three females on exhibit with male giraffe Congo, who has not been introduced to the baby yet. Congo will be on exhibit Saturday from 2:30 – 6 p.m. and during tomorrow’s member night from 6 – 8 p.m.

“Congo is very interested in the baby, but due to the huge size difference, we are holding on introducing the two until she gets bigger,” said Cortelyou.
Camilla was named by Philanthropist Maggi (Margaret) Turner in honor of her niece, Camille.  Margaret was instrumental in bringing giraffes to the Nashville Zoo and generously contributed to the “Stick Your Neck Out” campaign which raised funds to build the giraffe facility.  Camilla’s Mom, Margarita, is named for Maggi (Margaret)
Masai giraffes are one of nine different sub-species and are known for their oak-leaf shaped spot pattern. They are native to the savannas of Kenya and Tanzania in Africa.
Nashville Zoo is accredited by the prestigious Association of Zoos and Aquariums, assuring the highest standards of animal care and husbandry. About Music City Honor Flight.

Music City Honor Flight, a program honoring Nashville area World War II veterans, announced it will fly Nashville area World War II veterans to Washington D.C. to see the World War II Memorial built in their honor. The all expense paid trip is scheduled for September 5, 2012.

According to retired Army Colonel John Furgess, President of Music City Honor Flight, “Sixteen million Americans served during World War II. Now there are probably just a little more than 2.7 million still alive. However, we are losing them at a rate of anywhere from l,500 to l,700 a day. So it is somewhat urgent that we take as many as possible to see the memorial that was built to thank them for their service and to mourn the more than 400,000 war dead who will never see it.”

Website: If You Want to Increase Your Home’s Value, Support Locally Owned Businesses.

Very interesting article on increasing home values by buying local. There are several shops on Trousdale and in Grassmere Park plus neighbors that their own run businesses. Please remember to buy local and support our neighborhood.

If You Want to Increase Your Home’s Value, Support Locally Owned Businesses in Your Neighborhood.

Based on a recent study by American Express OPEN, home values in neighborhoods with strong independent retail districts grew at a much faster rate over a 14 year period than those without.

http://www.independentwestand.org

In the Nashville Metro area, the average home value would have increased 111% or $111,263 to $211,563 from 1997 to 2011 if it was located near a successful independent business district.

The brush collection trucks are already in the neighborhood. There’s one on the Trousdale end of Lynn. It’s the last-minute to add to your brush pile. The Neighborhood will look better without all the piles of limbs by the street.

Brush Collection in Caldwell Abbay Hall starts June 12

Brush and Leaf Collection pick-up starts Tuesday June 12. Remember during the last collection period the trucks were on our streets the first day of the collection period.

“Residents in Metro Nashville’s Urban and General Services Districts have their brush and yard waste collected three times a year on a rotation schedule along 12 routes. Instead of chippers, Metro Public Works uses knuckle boom trucks equipped with a mechanical arm that lifts brush piles up and into a trailer that’s pulled behind the truck.

  1. Put brush out before the first day the trucks are scheduled to be in your Area.
  2. Place your brush where your garbage is collected – at the curb if your trash is collected there or in the alley if you have alley trash collection
  3. Leaves and grass clippings can be put out with your limbs and other brush in brown paper bags ONLY. Plastic bags will not be accepted.

Next pick up should be in mid October.
